Inspirational Subway Art...With Printable (AND a GREAT alternative to Picnik!!!)

I'm currently in the process of changing out the decor of my master bathroom and doing a "mini makeover".  One of the projects that I did was a subway art of a great saying that I fell in love with.  In our house, I have several inspirational sayings as well as scriptures integrated...just sprinkled throughout...I feel it provides a positive tone and reminds us of "who" we are serving and "what" our purpose is...especially when life gets harried or on days when the things in this life (such as my illness) start to wear on my weary body.  So...I love to surround myself in POSITIVITY!!!!  How about you?

I will be showing you some before and afters of my mini makeover in the bathroom soon, along with some tutorials of some of the projects.  However, as of today...here are some pictures of my new subway art canvas hanging on one of the walls in the bath...I LOVE how it turned out:

I utilized the picture editing program Picnik for this project...am SUPER bummed that it will be going away in April.  But, this is how I completed this project...I am going to have to find a new program to fall in love with!  (And, I think I just may have found the replacement I needed...PicMonkey!!!).

I had this post all ready to go except for the photos above because I wanted to watermark them, and yesterday I received my confirmation e-mail that PicMonkey was up and running...how coincidental is that? (I read a blog a while back that it was a rumor that it was possible it was going to be similar to Picnik...a lot of the former Picnik designers are starting it up...so they say).  I found it easy to navigate...not as fancy, but for my needs...PERFECT!!!  I still need to look into it a little more...but I think I have my replacement!!!  Check it out if you were a loyal Picnik user and are scrambling to look for a good replacement!!  www.picmonkey.com...FREE!!!  One thing I did notice...not as many fonts and I couldn't find where I could upload to photobucket, but it just came live...so things like that may change...and, I haven't explored everything!

Anyway, onto the tutorial...ALL OF THE TUTORIAL IS BASED ON PICNIK...however, now that I got a peek at PicMonkey...I think it will do the same thing...AWESOME!!!

This is how I completed this project:

1)  First, I uploaded one of my photos into Picnik that was vertical (however picture didn't matter because I covered over it...just needed to be good quality).

2)  I sized the photo to the ratio that I wanted and covered it with a black rectangle box (I wanted a black background...but if you wanted different background you can choose differently).  Completely cover the photo with the black rectangle box...(See why it didn't matter what your photo was?)

3)  I typed the text (each individual line)...you must choose the type of font you want and size it...plus color.

4)  Pretty much...make sure it looks good from there...space it up the way you want it, etc...save to computer, flicker, photobucket...etc.  Then, I had a Groupon that I had purchased for a great price and I sent in to print on a canvas...I cheated...I know...BUT....I LOVED the end result!!!

In case you liked mine that I made....I am sharing my printable with you for FREE:

Subway art is very popular right now, and hopefully you will be able to develop a wonderful piece of subway art that can inspire you as well.  I love how this encourages us to "forgive; be kind; succeed; be honest and sincere; create; be happy; do good; and give your best."

  3. I just found your site via the Sunday Social. I also just did a post for a Picnik alternative and one was PicMonkey. The other was ipiccy (still in Beta). I am so much happier now that I know I won't be stranded without something. I am stopping in from TheStuffofSuccess and I am your newest follower. Thanks Athena

    1. I was so happy to read about PicMonkey on someone's site a few weeks ago when they were writing about some Picnik alternatives...at the time it wasn't up and running, and I simply signed up for notification...I think it will definitely fill the void...I was a little panicked! Thanks for stopping by!

  7. Hello Erin, Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog. I absolutely love this project. And the method is so much easier than the way I made my large subway art! I will sorely miss Picnic as well, but I'll look into PicMonkey.

Thank you also for the head up about PicMinkey - I have only *just* discovered Picnik via Picasa, good to see they have a similar interface (should make the transition pretty painless!)
