We each face difficulties in this life...no one is immune. Some face difficulties in the form of financial difficulties, or in the form of family issues, or medical issues...we can go on and on. Many of you reading this post are going through some sort of difficulty this very moment.
Then, of course, we can ebb and flow...at times we are coasting through life with very few difficulties or conflict, blessed in the fact that we are not in the middle of difficulties at the time. However, we each experience struggles, big or small, frequent or infrequent. How we deal with them makes a HUGE difference in how we experience life. When faced with difficulties, however big or small they might be...I propose we smile...
Smile you might say? Yes...SMILE! A good attitude and relying on our Savior and his promises in the face of difficulties will help with the perseverance needed for our life here on earth. I love this quote from Joyce Meyers:
"Battles are fought in our minds every day. When we begin to feel the battle is just too difficult and want to give up, we must choose to resist negative thoughts and be determined to rise above our problems. We must decide that we're not going to quit. When we're bombarded with doubts and fears, we must take a stand and say: ' I'll never give up! God's on my side. He loves me, and He's helping me! I'm going to make it!"
Those of you who have been regular readers of this blog know that I have a chronic medical condition. Many of you that follow also have chronic medical conditions, as you have shared in private messages. I've had comments on my positive attitude/outlook in the midst of chronic pain. My answer? I have the hope of eternal life, and I believe in His promises. Do I have really bad days...yes...but, I try to keep my attitude positive (yes, and I sometimes falter). However, I must focus on His promises and persevere toward my ultimate goal of an eternal life in heaven. I'm promised a life of no pain and no tears...and, you are too! So, I can persevere...through difficulties. And, I try to remember to smile...honestly, it makes the world of difference in interactions with others.
Do I think it would make a difference if I chose to complain/whine/not smile and have a bad attitude whenever I felt bad....ABSOLUTELY, in a negative way!!! Have you ever been say, at the grocery store, and your cashier wouldn't smile or interact with you at all...regardless of what you tried to do to be nice and cheer them up? I have...it is depressing. If I acted like this cashier every. single. day that I felt bad or had difficulties, NO ONE would want to be around me. So, a genuine smile and good attitude is desirable. Even if people don't know you, a smile is often returned with a smile...and, if I'm having a bad day...I'd rather be greeted with smiles than with frowns....wouldn't you?
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9
"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6
"More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope" Romans 5: 3-4
I'm sharing with you a beautiful song, appropriately titled "Smile", written by Charlie Chaplin. This particular version is being sung by Nat King Cole, courtesy of YouTube. The first line of the song: "Smile though your heart is aching..."so powerful in lyrics. In fact, the title of this post was a line pulled from this song...did you catch onto that before I said it? Most people have heard this song before, but I encourage you to listen to it again...listen to the lyrics/read them on the screen while video is playing if you wish...So beautiful.
And, finally, just remember that:

I have been through some very stressful events and spent lots of time trying to improve my attitude. I have learned we can control our thoughts and at times we really need to. I love your post about smiling. Its refreshing to know that we all go through trials but in the midst we can still smile. I'm loving Galatians 6:9 these days and praying for a better job. For the time being, I will smile to everyone I interact with today. Thanks again!

I have rheumatoid arthritis and can relate to the living with pain thing. Attitude is everything with chronic illness and if you don't find the strength to smile and laugh then depression just dominates your life. This was a sweet post--glad I found you through the Tickled Pink hop.
ReplyDeleteThank you for such an encouraging post.

Erin, what a wonderfully encouraging post. I agree with you, we have a fantastic hope in a great Saviour of one day being in a pain-free & suffering free world with him forever.. and in the meantime, we have a loving God who walks with us each day and works in all things on our behalf. I really needed to be reminded of this today as I have been having a horrendous pain weekend. Thanks sister & smile on! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you understand when I say, hope some days is what carries me through. I appreciate your thoughtful comment. It pains me to hear that you are having a bad a weekend. Those days are the most difficult, you are in my prayers, friend. Prayers and blessings,

ReplyDeleteChronic pain is, well, a pain. But you are so right about our attitudes. We always have a choice whether or not to choose joy. I remember reading somewhere that when we smile, it activates something in our brains so we feel happier. I always thought that was pretty amazing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a bright sunny spot in my morning!
Thank you for your comment, Kim. I totally agree with everything you said. We might not be able to control our circumstances, chronic pain, etc....but, we do have control of our attititude. I like that about smile making the brain feel happier as well...kind of goes hand in hand with the saying "fake it to you make it". Appreciate your kind and thoughtful comment! Blessings,

Choosing to smile...that's so important. It reminds us that we get to CHOOSE our attitude.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Absolutely, Mary Beth! Just like I was saying above...we can't control circumstances...but, just like you said...we can CHOOSE how we react and our attitude!!! Blessings,

Very true! I have a friend who was so sick with cancer and was given a terminal diagnosis. (Thankfully she has had a miracle and the diagnosis has been reversed) but what amazed me was no matter what she was going through, she always had a smile for the nurses, the doctors, her visitors... it really made people realize how lucky they are if she could be smiling in the midst of this horrible suffering.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I just wanted to thank you for stopping by our CHQ Blog Hop again this week - see you again next Tuesday :)
What a blessing that I found this post! It's exactly what I needed to read today. I've been struggling with a hip injury for 2 years and sometimes I slip into being negative about it... and yeah it does no good! Thanks for the reminder! I'm your newest follower :)
