Toot Your Horn Tuesday #14

Welcome everybody to Toot Your Horn Tuesday #14!  I hope you are having a wonderful Memorial Day weekend with family and friends.  And, I hope you take a minute to thank the Veterans in your life!  I'm glad you are here to celebrate and party with Debbie and me @ Toot Your Horn Tuesday!

I'd like to take a short pause to honor a wonderful Veteran as well as Christian man...my uncle CJ.  He was like a father to me...one of the best men I knew...I love(d) him dearly.  Memorial day last year he past away from a sudden, massive heart attack.  All of this to say...don't take life for granted, this life is but a vapor, and tell those you love how much they mean to you!  I'll always have such wonderful memories of my uncle!

Okay, party time...

Features are posted each Monday before we start the next weeks party in a separate post.  If I featured your post, my feature button can be found in the sidebar.  If you haven't checked out the features from last weeks party...please do, they are AWESOME!!!  Also, we won't feature someone that doesn't have our button somewhere on their blog (doesn't have to be on post or sidebar...but somewhere in link parties, etc.).  And, please update to the most current button, since the party has changed to include both of us...the button has changed as well!

Did you check to see if you were featured by Debbie or myself this week?  Check here to see if I featured you and check Debbie's blog here if she featured you this week.  Remember that features are now their own posts each week on each of our blogs.

Are you ready to party?

  2. Please grab our button and place it on your blog, party list, link back to our party somewhere so you can remember to come back and check if you have been featured each week; remember to link back up next week, etc....ALSO...so we can spread the word of the Toot Your Horn Tuesday Party! We will not feature without link back to party.

Don't forget that Debbie and I are each doing separate features.  So, head over to Debbie's blog @ Debbie Does Creations to check her features and see if you were featured with her as well.

Deep In the Heart of,,,Arkansas? stated this was the first time fixing up a furniture find...Well, it is a beauty!  What a find @ the Habitat for Humanity Restore for $20!!!  AND the before and after will absolutely knock everybody's socks off...GREAT JOB!!!  May be the first time, but shouldn't be the last time with results like this...

I liked how Decorating the Dorchester Way decorated and infused memories of her family in her master bedroom gallery wall...full of sentimental touches!  Lots of great ideas to take away...some I may have to tuck away for some projects of my own.  I love the project where she spray painted the frame and used her leather skirt that she wore the day her husband proposed to her as a background.  Sentimental, heartfelt, and classy touches all throughout the gallery wall.  LOVE!!

Can we all say YUMMY!!!!  The Crafty Blog Stalker shared this delicious recipe for Apple Nachos...I'm drooling as I type this!  What a great recipe for the summer!

I love this tutorial from NZ Ecochick where she transforms an old formula tin into this beauty using spray paint and a mod podge image transfer technique:

Congratulations if you were featured, and a big "thank you" to each of you who linked up!  Hope you enjoyed the features.  Grab your featured button from my sidebar to display on your blog!

Come back tonight to link up for this weeks "Toot Your Horn Tuesday".  We can't wait to see what everyone links up this week!

Moss Wreath

A few weeks ago I participated in a trading blogs party and I had the pleasure in trading blogs with Danni at Silo Hill Farm.  I'm so glad that I signed up and joined in, because I was able to meet and discover Danni's wonderful blog. In return, some of you may remember Danni sharing one of her amazing tutorials over here on my blog as well!  Love this idea!  Well, in case you missed out on my post on Danni's blog...I posted about a Moss Wreath that I recently made for my living room...here is a repost of the tutorial that I shared with Danni and her blog, and now you...hope you enjoy:

I LOVE WREATHS!  I don't know what it is lately...but, I have the "wreath bug"...every time I turn around it seems I'm wanting to make another wreath.  (whether it be for another holiday, just an everyday wreath, etc.)  I love them!!!  Today, I'm going to share with you one of my latest wreaths I've created, a moss on grape vine wreath.

I've seen several versions of moss wreaths floating around Pinterest as well as the blogosphere, and I knew that I wanted to make a moss wreath as an everyday/spring wreath to hang on the mirror on my mantel in my living room.  Recently, I've been hanging some of my wreaths there, and I've loved having a wreath hanging over my antique mirror on the mantel.  Here are the links to some of the tutorials to some of the other wreaths here and here, and I have several other wreath tutorials that can be found on my blog as well (they can be found here).  However, these wreaths were seasonal and holiday and not "year round".  I felt like the moss wreath was a neutral that could be used anytime during the year...so, I got busy!

I'm going to be completely honest with you here...this project is a little messy, and not the easiest project I've undertaken.  Since the weather has been nice and pretty, I took all of my materials outside, so I wouldn't make a "total mess" indoors.  And, believe me, the moss will make a mess.  However, it is a worthwhile undertaking if you are interested in creating a wreath of your own, and the results are super cute and worth it in the end!

Supplies Needed for Project:
  • Grapevine Wreath (I found this was the best wreath form for adhesion of moss)
  • Moss (I purchased several bags from the Dollar Tree...one of my favorite craft suppliers.  I check them out first most of the time to see if I can get things cheaper, then go elsewhere.  Big budget saver!)
  • Elmers Spray Adhesive
  • Wired Ribbon for Bow
  • Mini Chalkboard (For embellishment of wreath)
  • Hot Glue/Hot Glue Gun (To attach Mini Chalkboard)
  • Trash bags (To assist with clean up)
When I first started out on this project, I planned on working with a styrofoam wreath that I had purchased from the Dollar Tree; however, the spray adhesive and moss combo was not sticking to the wreath form AT ALL!  I had more moss on my fingers than on the wreath...now that wasn't going to work!  No one said that craft projects go perfectly all the time!  So, I went with plan B...I used a grapevine wreath that I had purchased from the Dollar Tree...and with perseverance, the moss adhered to the grapevine wreath.

The steps to complete this project are fairly self explanatory...biggest hurdle is simply getting the moss to stick to your wreath (and not you)!  I just worked with little sections at a time, spraying my adhesive liberally, placing larger amounts of moss where I had sprayed adhesive and pressing for a few seconds to ensure adhesion.  I continued this around the wreath form.  Occasionally, I would also shake the loose moss free (there will be some).  I went over the layers 3 times to get this thickness, and I was happy with it.

Finally, once moss is completely adhered and dry, I added a bow in a neutral taupe to match the colors in our living room.  Then, I took one of my clothespin chalkboards, deconstructed it so that I only had a chalkboard left....and, I added my mini chalkboard onto the wreath with a dollop of hot glue from the hot glue gun.  (This is the part where someone could totally put their own spin on the wreath and personalize however they want...possibilities are endless)!

After adding the word "Home" to the chalkboard, I placed the wreath on its hook on the mirror.  Sometimes "plan B" works out just as well as "plan A" after all:

This was a fun project, and I love the "neutrality" of the wreath...giving me versatility.  When I don't have an "occasion" or "holiday" to decorate the mantel for...this will definitely be my go to wreath...at least until I decide to do another wreath ;)...hope you were inspired...and, let me know what you think.  Something you might try?  Are you enjoying wreaths as much as I am?  What about all the moss wreaths...in love like me?

I hope everyone has a lovely holiday weekend.  I also hope you are able to spend some quality time with your family.  Hold your friends and family close...don't forget to tell them you love them every chance you get!!!  And, don't forget to honor our Veterans!

One more thing...I know you may be busy with friends and family on Monday...but, don't forget to come and link up with the funnest party in town...Toot Your Horn Tuesday that I co-host with my wonderful friend Debbie @ Debbie Does Creations.  It will still open @ 8:00 pm Monday night, but you will have all week to link up.  Also, our features will be up on Monday as well.

Blessings friends,

Each week I may link up at the parties located at my tab located on my blog love tab here. Feel free to check these lovely sites out!

Michelle @ Michelle Paige hosted A Spoon Party for her friend's 40th birthday party.  The spoon party holds a special significance for her friend, and Michelle referenced the meaning behind the spoon theory and spoon party, which I can relate to due to having a chronic illness myself.  I LOVE the thought, decor, food, and FUN put forth for Michelle's friend's spoon party.  Plus, THE DETAILS...she didn't miss a thing!!!  Go check it out...and while you are @ it...check out the spoon theory and the "why" behind the spoon party! Thanks, Michelle...for your "support and awareness" for your friend!

Delle @ Yearning to Create decorated, painted and beautified this crate that she found @ a thrift store with her family motto...you won't believe some of the materials that she used to decorate with!  I absolutely ADORE the transformation!  And, I love the scripture that she used as well...LOVE IT, Delle!  Great tutorial!

I loved two posts that Lorrie @ Finding Secret Treasure linked up:
Cutting Edge Stencil-Room with a View post...Love the stenciling and old window...just gorgeous...

and....Beginnings of Summer Porch post...Love her style, inclusion of old meets new.  And, as always...love the inclusion of scripture, positive sayings.  I believe I'm going to have to do a "copycat" of her stepladder...LOVE IT!!!

"Loved" Suicide Awareness and Half Bath Mini Tour...Guest Post with Sasse Life

I recently shared this post with the readers of the Sasse Life...this is a repost.  Hope you enjoy!

Hello lovely readers of "the Sasse Life".  I am so blessed to be asked by Kim to guest post here at her amazing blog, "the Sasse Life".  She is just the sweetest, and I was the luckiest girl just a few weeks ago to win one of her BEAUTIFUL "loved" brooches that she hand crafts in her new "Loved" shop, which was opened to remind us that we are to love one another and to raise suicide awareness...a WONDERFUL CAUSE!

When I received Kim's brooch, I was very excited...I knew exactly where I wanted it to go.  I know it can be worn as a brooch, but I decided to utilize it in another way...as decoration.  I wanted to use it as decor in my half bath downstairs...loved how it fit into the decor...

Top Left: close up of brooch, Bottom Left: Brooch, red and black beads purchased @ Dollar Tree ,
Right: Pedestal dish inherited from great aunt...I love to integrate heirlooms when I can

Just as I like to integrate heirlooms, items of special meaning (i.e. "loved" brooch) throughout my home...I like to integrate items which invoke "memories".  I've done just this in our half bath by decorating with pictures, postcards, drawings, etc. purchased from my husband and my travels.  Here's pictures:

Top left: Pictures we bought on vacation in New Orleans, Bottom Left: Post Card of trolley purchased on same New Orleans trip, Top Right: Another Picture purchased on New Orleans trip
as well as framed "L" purchased from a Charleston, SC trip,
Bottom Right: We framed photos, post cards, etc. uniformly to create a unified black and white look
When we first purchased our home, our half bath was painted  burgundy.  I personally like burgundy walls...but, it was not becoming of our small half bath.  So, we found this greyish paint in the "oops" bin, and liked how it complemented  the black and white scheme.  In addition, we painted the cabinet black...ALL of our cabinets in our home were a natural color with a heavy varnish over them (thankfully I have a very handy husband who has painstakingly updated all of our cabinets since except for our upstairs bathroom...which I am going to try to tackle).  We also added a new light fixture in here, new fixtures, etc. (the little touches really do make a big difference)!   And, to add an additional "pop"...I added a few reds.  However, one of the biggest changest in this room was when we laid tile over the UGLY laminate...BIG IMPROVEMENT!!!
Since the "mini-makeover" was all BEFORE I ever even dreamed of a blog, I don't have before and after photos.  However, here is pic of the tile...just take my word for it...BIG IMPROVEMENT!!!

So, there it is...a "mini tour" of my half bath...as well as a glimpse at where I used my "loved" brooch.  And, while we are on the subject of the "loved" brooch...I thought I would share a little bit about why I'm SO GLAD Kim is supporting suicide awareness.  Kim shared a very touching story of how suicide touched her life so personally...I'm going to share a little story as well....

I went to a private, christian university...some of the best years of my life!  We had rules at our university...one of them being a curfew...so we had dorm monitors/RAs to check everybody in at night.  One semester, this was my work study job.  One night, I was up late, checking people in...when a friend ran down telling me to "call 911"...someone I knew had slit her wrist, and her roommate (that I had just checked in) had just found her.  Sparing all the details, the ambulance arrived...and, after a stint in the hospital...she survived.  Why did she do it?  She and her boyfriend had broken up...she felt hopeless...like there was no tomorrow.  I remember that night to this day.  One of the more memorable nights, not in a good way, from my college experience.

In addition, I graduated from college with a degree in social work...I worked with individuals diagnosed with clinical depression (something NO ONE should ever be ashamed of).  Depression is real, and it is no respecter of persons, social status, etc.  Don't be ashamed to ASK FOR HELP!!!  As a social worker, I worked with people stating they "wanted to kill themselves".  And, I worked to help caretakers in setting up suicide prevention plans.  Unfortunately, I've seen the hurt that suicide leaves behind...

That is why I appreciate Kim in raising the awareness of suicide prevention.  This is my personal thanks, Kim.

Thank you again, Kim, for allowing me to share with your wonderful readers.  If you enjoyed this article, please feel free to come visit me @ Chronic Christian Crafter.  I would love to have you.  You can find and follow me via:

Jill at Two Yellow Birds Decor created this stylish craft that displays all of the special dates to her family.  Easy to follow tutorial...so cute!  And, budget friendly too!

Since spring is in the air and flower planting time is upon us, Joy @ Joy 2 Journey provided a timely and much needed tutorial on how to plant and properly set up your planters.  I'm in the process of getting my spring planting in place, so I enjoyed some of her pointers she provided.

Congratulations.  Hope you enjoyed the features.  Grab your featured button from my sidebar.

Mail Organization Tray Update

We all know that I am a lover of yard sales, estate sales...all things thrifty...well...I found this little beauty at one of my yard sales recently:

I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do with her.  You see, in our house, paperwork and mail can get OUT OF CONTROL...one day I will have the mail sorted, all nice and taken care of...and then the next day it seems...a big stack is there waiting on me ONCE AGAIN.  We have had a "semi permanent" place for papers on the counter top in the kitchen...but, I've never really liked papers just stacked there.  So, that is the back story.  I wanted something to "chorale" the paperwork more efficiently.  When I saw this (at a very reasonable price, of course) I knew this is what I needed.

As she was, she was okay...but, I wanted something "more"...I wanted to "pretty her up" a little.  So, here are some after shots.  The directions are so self explanatory, I figured in between shots were unnecessary...

Materials Used On This Project:
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Contact Paper (Purchased @ Dollar Store...isn't it darling?)
  • Sponge Painter
  • Sander (To sand wood prior to painting)
  • Screwdriver (To remove handles for painting, and replace after painting)
  • Scissors (To cut contact paper)
This is another one of my simple projects!  However, here are directions:
  1. Remove handles with screwdriver.
  2. Sand in order to remove rough spots and prepare for paint.
  3. Paint with chalkboard paint.  I painted 2 coats so that it was covered properly.  (This was from the same free paint my friend provided me...YEAH!!!)  If I want to write on the side...I can!
  4. Cut contact paper to size and place on bottom of tray. I used credit card to ensure it was on without bubbles, etc.
  5. Replace handles.
See...simple as that!!!

Now, I have a cute tray to collect all the mail/paperwork instead of everything laying around!  I feel much more organized (even if it is an illusion sometimes).  Hope you were inspired!  Blessings friends,
